Friday Musings

The day started 3am early because my sleeping rhythms are still off but maybe not by much really when I consider that at home in Tucson I seem to wake up around 4am - still in sync with Carols old VA work schedule and can only periodically break habit.  Doesn’t make sense of course because Bali is +15 hours from Tucson - could never totally grasp techniques used by world travelers to offset time zone changes, even though I commuted to New York City 37 years for work, but there’s new improved research all the time.  I just read an article about airlines trying to improve timing of meals, cabin lighting, announcements, etc. in order to help passengers adapt to long haul time changes - they have been doing that for pilots and crews for long time but even there researchers are finding ways to improve.  Maybe I don’t have to do anything on return trip but go along with their program - I suspect there’s no way to get around the issue entirely except to just stay home and do virtual travel by TV 📺, an option best not to contemplate until MUCH later in life though!

It’s amazing that when you’re out of your daily routines in a new setting and have no rigid schedule to follow, the sense of time has a different feeling.  I remember when I worked outdoors on my uncles  Wisconsin dairy farm some summers in my youth and a few years in adulthood, I never wore a watch but always knew what time it was within five minutes, give or take a few - just flowed along the with the rhythm of the day and the movement of the sun and moon.  Same here - there are new adventures that pop up, some planned, some spontaneous but the mornings now are starting to have a rhythm a bit like home - meditate, maybe a little yoga, coffee, putzing around, maybe eat something and now being here with the addition of writing this blog, catching up on emails with faraway friends, family and my household friends.  Today is less busy then previous days as reported, yay!, so will stroll to the beach soon where there is a longer high tide for a nice long swim, have a late breakfast at Genius Cafe, read and perhaps attempt writing a poem about PASSION for the Poetry Slam tomorrow night at Rumah Sanur restaurant gathering place.

This evening we go to a small venue for really good live jazz hosted by Indonesia’s foremost semi retired jazz musician and club owner Indra Lesmana and many of his friends and students - went last Friday and it was excellent.  Oops, that was TWO FRIDAYS ago - time warp!

These are shots from that distant past, two weeks ago.
Evening just getting started.....lucky to get  a table - VERY limited seating but dedicated late arrivals just stand, even onto sidewalk and amongst parked scooters.

Back from swim and a bit of reading of Salman Rushdie’s new book, Quichotte:A Novel.   Since I didn’t get to beach until around Noon because of that aforementioned time warp shift, the tide had gone out and water was rather shallow so I more slithered along bottom than full bore swimming 🏊.   Heading out soon for jazz night and perhaps post a few videos later tonight before calling it a day.

Good crowd tonight and good talent coming in and out - women singer and flutist, two different drummers, sax player, electric guitar, upright base, and guest keyboard - Indra amazing with one fast set in particular.
